What's Your Pour-oscope? March Edition

Humans have always looked to the stars for inspiration about what the future holds when it comes to work, romance and relationships, even money. So why can’t the stars also inspire what our glasses hold? That is the idea behind our new monthly series, “What’s Your Pour-oscope?” Each month, we’ll highlight 12 bottles to accent what is written on the stars for every sign in the zodiac. March 20 marks both the spring equinox and the astrological New Year, when the solar season begin anew, so the stars are truly aligned for this one. The sky is the limit!

Pisces: Chateau Peyrassol Reserve Templiers 2019

What a birthday month, Pisces! On Saturday, March 20, the sun moves into your sign, kick-starting both the new season and Aries season. For the next month, your sign rules the skies, so be prepared to get attention. It’s a great time to start—or sip—something new, like Els Vinyerons "Lluerna" Xarel-lo 2019. New to our shelves, this vegan biodynamic white is a joint venture between Amós Bañeres and Alex Ruiz in Penedès, Catalonia. Amós is a former pharmacist who grew tired with his occupation and started to make natural wine in 2011 under the Amós Bañeres name. He joined with Alex, a winemaker who had been making Cava for his family winery and was yearning for a fresh challenge. With notes of white pepper, pear blossom, and flint on the nose and spicily complex flavors of Gala apple and white peach, this refreshing wine is gorgeous with Manchego-topped bruschetta, baked fish, poultry, and roasted veggies. 

Taurus: Neirano Barolo 2016

Taurus, you’re always looking for comfort, especially after all of the hard work you’ve been putting in lately. The sun fully supports this, slipping into your restful twelfth house this weekend. It’s a perfect time to kick back and enjoy this Barolo from Tenute Neirano, a wine as powerful and classic as you are. Founded by Antonio Sperone in the heart of Monferrato, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its exceptional beauty and singular terroir, this award-winning red is garnet-colored in the glass, dry, yet velvety and austere on the palate, framed by aromas of crushed roses and violets. Serve alongside roasted and stewed meat, game, and strong cheeses. This one needs decanting, but like you, it’s worth the wait.

Gemini: Domaine Bonnardot Hautes Cotes-de Beaune 2019 

Gemini, some call you two faced, but we know you just love to chat. You’re a born superconnector. This month, the stars are all how you use your social graces to help bring your brilliant ideas to life. This Pinot Noir from Domaine Bonnardot, a family estate with winemaking roots that dat back to the 1400s, is a crowd-pleaser that’s got plenty to say. Smoothly textured and filled with juicy red berries and savory sweet herbs, it’s as unforgettable as you are. Pair with roasted white meats, seared duck breast and mushroom risotto.

Cancer: Rihaku “Dreamy Clouds” Sake

Sensitive and caring, but with a taste for the unusual—that is Cancer is a … well, crab shell. Tune into your inner voice, set your intentions, and visualize what you want. Venus will join the sun in Aries this month, which means that you definitely don’t have to do all of that work, and all of the sipping alone. Look to sake this month, as the stars shift you from imagining the big things in your future to making them happen. Inspired by famed Chinese poet Li Bai, also known as Rihaku, Dreamy Clouds sake is made in the nigori or unfiltered style. It’s been a luxuriously easy month, Leo, but the sun is about to roar into your ninth house of growth, adventure and connections (especially of the romantic variety). Get ready! This red blend from California is everything you need for this new season. Three generations of the Leonardini family (hence, “Tre Leoni”) are responsible for this expertly made proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel. The wine opens with notes of candied blackberries, red currants, black plums, anise, and sage. The palate is bursting with ripe, earthy fruits dusted with rich cocoa powder. Sexy and silky smooth from start to finish the wine has incredible texture and vibrance acidity that makes this a sure-fire match for BBQ, burgers, even veggie lasagna.

Virgo: Felipa Pato “Post-Quercas” Baga 2018

Virgo, you like everything in its proper place, preferring finesse to mess, especially when it comes to relationships, a key theme for you this month. However, the change of season brings with you an invitation to loosen up, get funky, and let go in order to expand your heart and well-being. This Baga, from Filipa Pato and William Wouters, a magical wife and husband collaboration dedicated to creating authentic wines using indigenous varietals is perfect for you right now. Hand harvested, then fermented and aged in uncoated amphorae, the wine is silky on the palate, and full of bright red and black fruit. Finishes with a touch of earth, black pepper, and lingering complexity, the wine is wonderful with a slight chill and easily paired with everything from appetizers to Ethiopian fare

Libra: Jacquart Champagne “Mosaique” NV

Libra, you’re always seeking balance and harmony in your life. The sun Aries is set to heat up your seventh house of partnerships. From work relations to those closer to home, you play well with others this month, so this beautifully balanced bubbly is tailor-made for you this month. Using about 50% more rye than many bourbons, Old Forester has a remarkably good balance of flavors that are as deep and refined as you are, and just as fine in a cocktail as it is on its own.
