This wine, made from 100% Aglianico, is produced by the De Leonardis brothers, Carmine and Michele, at their family estate in the Vulture valley the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The region is widely known as the cradle of Aglianico, a varietal once called "Italy's least-known great grape" by Eric Asimov of the New York Times. The mineral-rich soil is ideal for this dry wine with dark, fruit flavors such as black cherry, blackberry, stewed plum, and spicy, smoked bacon, as well as persistent tannins that carry the wine to a long, smooth finish. Pair with Italian spicy sausage and escarole, barbecue, hearty stews, and pasta Bolognese.
